Dubai: Three suspects were arrested in two separate drug related cases recently, said a senior police official.

According to Major General Abdul Jalal Al Mahdi, Director of the General Department of Combating Narcotics at Dubai Police, an Emirati woman called the department's support line expressing concern over her brother's use of narcotics.

An investigative police unit amicably called him to the department as requested by his sister, who was concerned the news might affect her mother's well-being.

The brother confessed he was an addict and promised to seek help and assist the police. He informed the police of the source who supplied him with drugs. The supplier was arrested and referred to the public prosecution, said Maj Gen Al Mahdi.

The second case involves the arrest of two suspects in Hatta for using and trafficking drugs into a neighbouring country. The Gulf national suspects, who are residents of Sharjah and Ajman, were arrested while sitting in a parked car at a public park in Hatta. One kg of hashish and around 438g of heroin was found.

In their continuous efforts to combat narcotics, the department is monitoring online forums and chat rooms for possible drug trading operations, said Maj Gen Al Mahdi.

"We are especially monitoring websites that are not based in the UAE but are targeting youth in the country."

He added arrests in this regard had taken place and they worked with the authorities of these countries.
