Dubai: Three men have denied causing two per cent permanent disability to a businessman after attacking him in an elevator and stealing Dh270,000 in cash and cheques from him.

Records said one of the Indian suspects took the elevator from the third floor to the second floor, where his two associates jumped in, beat up the Pakistani businessman H.F. and stole his moneybag.

Pepper spray

"When the elevator door opened at the second floor, two of the suspects sprayed pepper in my eyes and beat me up, before snatching the moneybag and running away," claimed the 25-year-old businessman in his statement to the Public Prosecution.

"I kept grabbing at the clothes of the third suspect, who remained in the elevator until we reached the ground floor. He then quickly freed himself, opened the elevator door and escaped. Some pedestrians and I chased and stopped him before the police arrived at the scene," he testified.

On appearing before the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday, the three suspects - 36-year-old visitor M.E., 29-year-old unemployed S.S. and 36-year-old jobless A.M. - pleaded not guilty against the charges of stealing Dh210,000 in cash and six cheques for Dh60,000 from the moneybag and beating up H.F., causing permanent disability to his mouth and the loss of two teeth.

A Pakistani shop attendant testified that he saw the victim running down Al Mussallah Road and shouting out "thief", repeatedly, while chasing one of the suspects, who was later identified by the investigators as A.M.

An Emirati police lieutenant testified that the suspects had attacked the victim inside the elevator of the building where he stayed.

The trial will continue.
