Sharjah: Police yesterday arrested 10 men for allegedly attempting to steal high pressure cables from an electricity station in Al Sajaa area belonging to Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa).
A Sharjah Police official said the CID formed a team to investigate the case after a number of complaints of theft of power cables were registered with Sajaa police station .
The security guard of a Sewa plant foiled the attempt of five members of the gang to rob power cables from a plant where he was working and also managed to catch one of the thieves. The man who was caught later told police the names of his 13 accomplices. The CID team managed to arrest 9 of them while four are at large.
During interrogation, they confessed to stealing the cables that they intended to sell to a scrap company. The culprits are Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. A police investigation revealed that seven of them were staying in the country illegally. The suspects are currently detained and will be referred to the public prosecution.
Colonel Jihad Sahoo, Director of Sharjah Criminal Investigation Department, said the theft of power and copper cables worries businessmen as the cables cost millions of dirhams. He urged companies to double their efforts to secure their firms and to install security equipment connected with the police operation room to protect their valuable property .
Colonel Sahoo praised the role of the security guard who foiled the theft attempt and caught one of the culprits. Sharjah Police urged the public to report crimes and any suspicious activity to 999 or the toll free number Najeed 800151 or 06-5632222.
