Suspect 'does not know why he stabbed compatriot'

Dubai: The trial of a visitor, who claims he did not know why he stabbed his compatriot worker who was pronounced dead after 37 days in hospital, began on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Indian suspect, M.S., who was arrested from the scene of crime, told his interrogators: "I don't know why I stabbed him twice in his stomach. We were sleeping in the same office before I woke up, unconsciously walked into the kitchen, took the knife and stabbed him."
The 35-year-old Indian victim, S.M., who gave his statement to the police from his hospital bed before he died, said: "I was sleeping on the couch when the suspect surprisingly plunged the knife into my belly. Then he attempted to strangulate me after I pushed him away when he tried to cut open my stomach."
The Public Prosecution charged M.S. with the premeditated murder of his compatriot.
Policeman A.M., who questioned the deceased, testified: "The suspect's clothes were soaked in blood when we arrived at Ras Al Khor where the stabbing occurred. M.S. said his clothes were soaked in the victim's blood when he tried to help him. Meanwhile, the victim who was still alive had been moved to a hospital."
Records said police found the murder weapon on the pavement outside the office. Initial investigations revealed that the victim defended himself and escaped from the attacker, who called the police. Paramedic teams arrived at the scene by the time the victim had reached the pavement where he pulled out the knife from his stomach and threw it.
A.M. added: "The suspect told me that the victim bit him while defending himself. The suspect denied that he was on bad terms with the deceased and said he didn't know why he stabbed him."
The Dubai Court of First Instance will assign a lawyer to defend the suspect when it reconvenes later this month.
