Suspect denies trying to buy Dubai property with fake currency
A visitor has denied possessing and trying to sell 2.5 million Indian rupee in counterfeit currency which he reportedly paid to buy a property in Dubai, a court heard on Monday.
Dubai: A visitor has denied possessing and trying to sell 2.5 million Indian rupee in counterfeit currency which he reportedly paid to buy a property in Dubai, a court heard on Monday.
The Public Prosecution charged the 28-year-old Pakistani suspect, A.M., with possessing counterfeit currency from a foreign country with the intent to sell it herein, the charge which he denied when he before the Dubai Court of First Instance.
"I am innocent," the suspect told Presiding Judge Abdul Majid Al Nezamy who confronted him with his charges.
A 32-year-old Emirati businessman, who works in the real estate industry, claimed the he met the suspect who wanted to buy a property in Dubai for investment purposes.
The businessman, H.K., testified: "I showed him several flats and he agreed to buy a number of them for some businessmen who assigned him to buy them properties in the emirate… I only agreed to collect from him foreign currency after having the amounts checked at a money exchange house or a bank. I asked him for Dh500,000 as a down payment but he agreed to pay the equivalent of Dh250,000 in Indian rupee."
The Emirati alleged that he took the Indian rupees and headed to Naif area to a money exchange house which informed him that it was faked.
A police sergeant, who works in Dubai Police's Economic Crimes Section, claimed, in his statement, that H.K. reported the incident. The sergeant confirmed that the businessman assisted the police to arrest the suspect in a sting operation.
