Dubai: A plastic surgeon is seeking Dh15 million in compensation from a hospital which he claimed caused his patient's death after surgery that resulted in the health authorities cancelling his licence.

The Dubai Civil Court has ordered the Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) to assign a three-doctor committee to look into the American surgeon's allegations in his civil lawsuit.

The surgeon alleged that the hospital's doctors were negligent and failed to provide proper medical care for his Emirati female patient who died after plastic surgery that he performed.

He alleged that Dohms cancelled his licence due to the hospital's error and which has caused him a huge financial, emotional and moral loss.

Earlier this week, the court ordered the Dohms-assigned committee to decide whether the surgeon was responsible before, during and after the plastic surgery. The committee will also decide whether the American's compensation claim is realistic or not.

Records showed that the Dubai Healthcare City licensed the surgeon to practice cosmetic medicine in 2006.

He claimed in his lawsuit that his experience and reputation raked in a Dh7.2 million annual profit.

He mentioned in his lawsuit that following a television advertisement, the Emirati visited his clinic to have eyelid cosmetic surgery as well as eyebrow and neck lifting surgery.

The American arranged for the patient to have the operation at the hospital because he was not licensed to do plastic surgery in his private clinic, according to court records.

"On the day of the operation, a specialised doctor examined her and knew that she suffered [from] high blood pressure, but did not inform me. Before she was taken into the surgery room, the anesthesiologist re-examined her and discovered that she had high blood pressure, but also did not inform me. The operation was successful, but due to the high blood pressure, she bled ... the patient died due to the doctors' negligence and because she did not receive the proper medical care. Thereafter, Dohms cancelled my licence because of malpractice which the hospital's doctors committed," the surgeon declared in his lawsuit.

The surgeon handed the court a medical report which confirmed that his patient died due to the carelessness of the hospital's doctors.

"The cancellation of my licence has cost me a lot ... [I've] lost too many patients who were still in need of my consultations and prescriptions. "
