Sharjah: Police on Monday arrested a man who allegedly strangled a woman to death with a shaila (head scarf) before fleeing to Oman.

A senior official told Gulf News that the Bangladeshi suspect was arrested with the coordination of Interpol and Oman Police.

"The murder was committed on April 15, and police were notified about the incident when a person called to inform us that the body of a woman was found in a house in the Umm Makhnour area in Sharjah," said the police official.

When police reached the scene, they found the woman, also a Bangladeshi, lying on her face.

Following investigations, police believe that the shaila covering the woman's face was the murder weapon.

Shared accommodation

A number of Bangladeshi nationals were sharing the house where the body was found.

After initial investigations, police interrogated two women and three men who said that some of them were out of the house and had only found the body on their return.

One of those arrested, A.M., a Bangladeshi man who was subletting the house to the women, told police that when he had seen the suspect fleeing the villa as he returned home. A.M. said he was so terrified when he realised that the suspect had committed murder that he too fled the scene.

Confession

Sharjah Police, in cooperation with Interpol and the Ministry of Interior, eventually arrested the suspect in Oman.

Once the suspect was arrested, he allegedly confessed he had murdered the woman and alleged that she was involved in prostitution and running a brothel in the villa.

A.M. claimed he had previously warned the woman to stop bringing men into the villa because it was against the law but she had refused to listen.

The case has been transferred to Sharjah Public Prosecution.

A.M. has been charged with being an accomplice to concealing the crime.
