Abu Dhabi: The municipality found 17kg of inedible fish after carrying out a surprise inspection at a shop.

The fish was examined and destroyed after being deemed unfit for human consumption.

A case was filed with the Municipality Prosecution. The owner was then referred to the Court of First Instance for violating Abu Dhabi Municipality's food safety laws.

The shop owner admitted before the court that he had previously received a warning from the municipality regarding the cleanliness of his shop.

Plea for clemency

After a plea for clemency, the Court of Misdemeanour fined the owner Dh10,000. An official at the office of the prosecutor general issued a stark notice to owners of all food establishments to comply with health and safety regulations pertaining to their employees and shops.

Failure to do so will result in the closure of their establishments by the municipality in addition to legal consequences.

Spot check
  • A bad fishy smell.
  • Poke the fish with your finger, if the flesh springs back quickly then the fish is good. If your imprint remains then the fish is bad.
  •  The gills should be a bright colour; the scales should be shiny.
  • Look at the eyes; if they are sunk too far that means it's not fresh.
