Sharjah: University of Sharjah student Mubarak Mesha’al Mubarak died following a row over personal finances that escalated into a fight with two other Kuwaiti students also studying at the university, Sharjah Police said.

Mubarak died at the University City Hospital in Sharjah on Sunday evening after being involved in a physical altercation, police said on Tuesday in a statement. He was 19.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Sharjah was informed by the police officers on duty in the hospital that a Kuwaiti student was admitted to the emergency department in critical condition and that he was accompanied by a fellow student.

The report indicates that Mubarak died after repeated attempts by the doctors to save him. A physical examination showed multiple injuries all over the body.

The report also said that, after receiving the report, a team from the CID headed by the Director of the CID arrived at the hospital to assess the condition of the student and the initial inquiry caused them to suspect that criminal activity was behind the death.

Sharjah’s public prosecutor ordered that the body be moved to the forensics department of Sharjah Police and that the body be inspected by the coroner to determine the cause of death.

A fellow student of Mubarak, identified as Y.S, was questioned, because he had asked pedestrians for help to take Mubarak to the nearest hospital after he collapsed near a cafe in the Muweileh area.

Mubarak was quickly transferred to University City Hospital.

When Y.S. was asked about the injuries on the deceased’s body, Y.S. reportedly told police that he and another colleague, H.M, had beaten up Mubarak on multiple occasions over a period of three days in their shared accommodation, a flat in the Abu Daniq area of Sharjah that Y.S. had rented.

Y.S. told the police that he and Mubarak lived together, while H.M. visited them from time to time.

When the police arrested H.M, he too confessed to beating Mubarak along with Y.S, apparently to discipline him and cited personal differences and financial disputes between Mubarak and Y.S.

After reviewing the case, the public prosecutor ordered that Y.S. and H.M. be arrested pending reports from the coroner and forensics section, indicating that the circumstances of the case incriminated the fellow students.

Lawyer Fayez Al Dhaferi, who attended the Sharjah investigations, revealed in a statement published in a Kuwaiti e-newspaper that one of the students involved in the case, Y.S., belonged to the Kuwaiti ruling family.

Brigadier Abdullah Mubarak Al Dukhan, Deputy Commander General of Sharjah Police, expressed regret at the crime.

He confirmed that the parties involved were students between the ages of 18 and 19 who are in the early stages of their university education.

Al Dukhan stressed that Sharjah Police have given great attention to the case since it was first reported.

He added that Major General Hamid Mohammad Hudaidi, Commander General of Sharjah Police, ordered investigators to weigh every detail and collect background information in the presence of the public prosecution, which is pursuing the case.

Al Dukhan denied unsubstantiated reports on some social networking websites, text messaging services and some media about the incident and clarified that the students involved in the case had not been residing on the university campus.

He urged the media to obtain information from official sources in such cases.
