Sharjah: The anti-narcotics department of police and other police teams have tracked down and arrested a five-strong gang accused of smuggling a large amount of drugs into the country.

The group members, including three Emirati men, one man from the Comoros Islands and another from Tanzania, were arrested and charged with smuggling and possession of 19kg of heroin and four kilograms of marijuana.

The group is accused of smuggling drugs in order to sell them.

The arrest was made after the anti-narcotics department was able to gather information through confidential sources about a group of people who were in possession of a large amount of drugs.

Sharjah Police, in collaboration with Dubai Police and the anti-narcotics departments of the Ministry of Interior and Ajman Police, were able to track down two of the offenders who were in possession of two kilograms of marijuana along with 150 grams of heroin.

The other three suspects were tracked down and arrested soon after, along with a larger quantity of drugs that were found buried in the desert in Sharjah and Ajman.

Major General Humaid Mohammad Al Hudaidi, commander in chief of Sharjah Police, said that collaboration of all the police teams in the UAE led to tracking down of the suspected drug smugglers and distributors.

He said that through the use of strategic tools and sources, police were able to disclose the group’s plan to distribute and sell the drugs to young people in the country.
