Sharjah: Police have arrested five men for allegedly selling pornographic films.

The arrests were made while carrying out a campaign against couples living illegally together. The campaign against unmarried couples was launched last week.

"Five people were arrested after we discovered that they possessed and distributed pornographic material for a small price of Dh10 per film," said a senior official at Sharjah Police.

The five suspects were identified as M.K., N.M.R, G.H.M, all Afghan nationals, and B.H.R and Z.H.L, both Pakistanis.

The official said that all those arrested were also found to be violating residency laws and had entered the country illegally, and were staying here illegally.

The suspects were also allegedly found in possession of seven stolen mobile phones, and all the pornographic films they were selling were pirated.

The police official said that selling pornographic films is illegal in the country as it spreads immorality and also contradicts the emirate's Islamic culture.

The case has been referred to Sharjah Public Prosecution on charges of spreading immorality, violating copyrights law by selling pirated movies, staying in the country illegally and theft.
