Sharjah: Sharjah Police say they have arrested 263 absconders — including 53 house maids — in February during their campaign to detain offenders who have run away from their sponsors.

A Sharjah Police spokesman said the alleged absconders included men who washed vehicles for a living, collected aluminium cans, or sold counterfeit or pornographic films.

Others organised gambling and begging or distributed liquor.

The absconding housemaids included 34 Ethiopian women, 17 Bangladeshis, and the remaining were from Indonesia, who lived in apartments at Al Qasimiya area, police said.

Sharjah Police and the Naturalisation and Residency Department had earlier reported a number fo housemaids who absconded, and Sharjah Police followed up the investigation as part of their year-long campaign against illegal residents.
