Ras Al Khaimah: A blaze gutted the engine of a Russian commercial airplane on the runway of international airport here, but no casualties were reported.

This is the second incident of its kind in the past two years concerning the same airline.

A civil defence official said his section received a report on the blaze from the airport's management. Civil defence vehicles arrived at the scene and the fire was brought under control.

Shaikh Salem Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, who heads the Civil Aviation Department, said the Russian cargo plane was in its trial period after receiving maintenance to ensure it was air worthy.
