Dubai: A driver will serve a year in prison and cannot drive in the UAE for two years after a court convicted him of driving recklessly and causing a woman's death.

The Dubai Traffic Court of First Instance on Monday jailed the 38-year-old Asian driver for one year, fined him Dh7,000 and ordered him to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the Asian woman's family.

Presiding Judge Dr Abdullah Saif Al Shamsi revoked the convict's driving licence for one year and banned him from applying for a new driving licence for another year.

Traffic prosecutors charged the defendant with reckless and inattentive driving, wrecking two cars and accidentally killing the 37-year-old woman.

"We asked the traffic court to implement the toughest punishment applicable. The accused was speeding and drove incautiously without paying proper attention to the road safety. We have been asking the courts constantly to revoke driving licences and ban convicts from obtaining new licences... we always seek tough punishments which should be deterrent to errant and irresponsible drivers," said Chief Traffic Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution.

According to the charge sheet, the 38-year-old defendant drove inattentively and fast before he entered Dubai Sports City Road without giving priority to the main-road users.
