Ras Al Khaimah: A 20-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for carrying out a string of shop break-ins in the emirate.

“The suspect was arrested red-handed while he was attempting to remove the door of a shop,” Colonel Abdullah Ali Al Munkis, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Ras Al Khaimah Police, said.

The suspect was spotted as the CID team was carrying out its routine patrol.

During questioning the Emirati confessed to committing 18 shop burglaries, by either removing the doors of outlets or by staging car accidents to crash into their doors.

“Shop owners had filed several theft cases against an unidentified person who was breaking open the locks of their shops with sharp objects during the night and stealing products and money left there — or was removing doors or crashing a car into their premises,” Col Al Munkis said.

The suspect has been referred to the public prosecutor.

Col Al Munkis has urged parents to keep an eye on what their children are doing. He also urged shopkeepers to ensure they take full security measures and do not leave any money on the premises.

He urged owners to immediately report any suspicious acts to the police.

Ras Al Khaimah Police will hold inspection campaigns in cooperation with the authorities to make sure shopkeepers are following security measures, Col Al Munkis said.

He said the police had held several campaigns for shopkeepers and distributed leaflets in three languages (Arabic, English and Urdu), which contained tips on how to combat shop crime.
