Dubai: A university professor has been convicted of attempted suicide by breathing carbon monoxide from his vehicle's exhaust pipe.
The Dubai Court of Misdemeanour gave the 45-year-old British professor, identified as J.R., a one-month suspended jail term.
The man was found unconscious and taken to hospital where he was treated and saved. The Briton confessed before the court that he consumed liquor and tried to end his life because he was suffering from psychological problems and pressure at work.
The Public Prosecution charged him with attempted suicide by attaching a hose to the exhaust pipe and placing it in the car. He closed the windows and covered the car with a plastic shield. He started the car so he could breathe the carbon monoxide and die.
He was also charged with consuming alcohol. A worker alerted police that he found the car with its engine running and covered with a plastic shield.
Saved
The worker identified as A.M., said in his statement that he removed the shield and found the defendant unconscious in the front passenger seat. "I opened the door of the vehicle... he was unconscious. There was a strong smell of liquor coming out of the car," said the worker.
The man's wife said in her statement to police: "My husband consumed liquor. He connected the hosepipe to his car and jumped inside from the rear door seeking to end his life. He was taken to hospital."
The court suspended the punishment taking into consideration that he wouldn't commit the crime again.
