Pregnant mother applies for bail in drug case
Woman being held in detention along with her six-month-old baby says she is innocent
Dubai: A six-month-old girl is being detained with her six-month pregnant mother, who is facing charges of consuming drugs.
The mother pleaded not guilty in the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday.
"I am innocent ... I did not consume drugs. I am taking medication," the 25-year-old pregnant Emirati mother said. She is being accused of consuming and possessing drugs.
Her lawyer applied for bail for the sake of her child and unborn foetus.
"Three lives are being imprisoned. My client, her six-month-old foetus and the six-month-old baby-girl. My client is seeking bail because she cannot bring up her girl and she cannot take proper care of herself as a pregnant mother. Besides, she is innocent and haven't taken any drug. It was prescribed medication," Mohammad Al Shaiba of Al Bahr Advocates and Legal Consultants told the court on Sunday.
Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir and his associate judges are expected to issue their decision regarding bail very soon.
The Public Prosecution charged the 25-year-old woman with possessing eight capsules containing the banned substance clonazepam and 0.2 grams of heroin for personal use, as well as consuming morphine and mind-affecting substances.
An anti-narcotics first lieutenant testified: "We raided the woman's house in Al Mezher upon an informant's tip-off. We searched the house and seized eight suspected narcotic pills in a medicine box and a heroin pouch. We also arrested a man who alleged the seized items belonged to her."
The woman insisted before the Public Prosecution that she is under medication.
