Dubai: A policeman, who was caught in possession of drugs while he was being questioned over stealing Dh800 from a Dubai Metro passenger, has been jailed for four years.

Law enforcement officers caught the Omani policeman, A.M., red-handed while he was being quizzed over an Asian passenger’s complaint that A.M. beat him and robbed his money at one of the Metro stations.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of consuming morphine, diazepam, oxazepam, timazepam and nordazepam. He was also convicted of possessing two diazepam pills for consumption purposes.

The accused will be deported following the completion of his four-year imprisonment.

Records said an Emirati police lieutenant was questioning A.M. over the alleged theft at one of the stations when he noticed that he was acting strangely.

“As part of the protocol in questioning a member of the police, I asked him to remove his military badge and cap. He took out different forms of pills and capsules when I asked him to empty his pockets… then he confessed to me that he used to consume heroin around one year back,” the lieutenant claimed.

The defendant pleaded guilty.

Prosecution records said an Indian passenger reported to Dubai Police that one of the policemen beat him and took Dh800 from his pocket.

“The passenger claimed that he was attacked in October 2012. Two policemen denied their involvement in the incident… A.M. admitted that he stopped the passenger when he suspected him. The defendant claimed that he only beat the Indian to frighten him and that he took Dh800 from him. When he emptied his pockets, he put different pills on the table. I noticed that he was not concentrating. He admitted that he was addicted to heroin when I asked him about the pills,” claimed the lieutenant.

Dubai Police’s forensic medicine confirmed that the defendant tested positive for drugs.

Sunday’s judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
