Police show zero tolerance to men harassing women
They will face harsh penalties for causing disturbance at malls.
Ras Al Khaimah: Harassment of women will not be tolerated by police who put in place a major initiative to detain harassers on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Colonel Salem Yousuf Al Za'abi, Acting Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the emirate's police said those who harass women and families in the markets and shopping malls will end up in police custody and face tough penalties.
He added that the campaign is conducted in full collaboration with the Police Patrols Department to protect families and women from harassment. "Those who harass or cause any disturbance to women and families in the markets and shopping malls will face the law," he said.
"The behaviour of the potential harassers like their driving style in the parking lot of malls will be put under strict surveillance to identify them and later to monitor them at the malls," he added.
Harassment has proved to have negative consequences on society, he said, adding that it is a serious phenomenon which is widely spread in UAE society.
"The emirate's police have received an incredible number of complaints from women and families on harassment issues," he said.
"Police experts have carefully studied the phenomenon of harassment ... the techniques and ways the harassers use," he said.
The results of these studies have revealed that the markets and shopping malls were the ideal places for harassment and that the harassers also use stunt driving to catch the attention of women, he said.
