Dubai: Police have retrieved two stolen cars from a neighbouring country out of a batch of 56 that a gang had stolen.

Brig Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director General of Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department, said the two luxury cars, worth an estimated Dh600,000, were the first batch of the stolen vehicles, which included 20 from Dubai and 36 from a neighbouring emirate, to be exported.

The four had stolen 12 cars from Dubai last year and eight more this year. They also confessed that they had stolen 36 cars from another emirate.

Brig Al Mansouri said police teams earlier seized five cars before they were exported, while efforts are on to retrieve the rest of the cars in cooperation with authorities in Iran and Afghanistan. The Interpol has been informed about the remaining stolen cars in other countries.

Warehouses targeted

Lt Col Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, Director of the Criminal Investigation Section, said the gang started operating in April last year and stole luxury cars stored in warehouses in secluded areas.

The gang managed to evade arrests since they constantly changed their place of residence in the UAE.

Upon studying the gang's modus operandi, police connected the thefts in Dubai to 36 similar incidents in another emirate.

The gang was caught after police teams spotted a recovery car near a storage area in Aweer Car Market in March. Two suspects then proceeded to break a car window and load it into the recovery vehicle.
