Ajman: The Criminal Investigation Department of the Ajman Police on Saturday arrested five men who allegedly impersonated as policemen, robbed several people and fled the scene, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said.

The suspects, of Arab nationality, were arrested and charged with impersonating police officers after they harassed two Asians on Ajman roads near Dragon Mart, asking them to take out their their wallets which they inspected. They stole Dh550 and a mobile phone.

The police received complaints from two Asians who complained of impostors impersonating policemen and breaching their privacy before robbing them.

The suspects stopped the victims, asked them to show them what was in their possession such as wallet and mobile phone and stole these before fleeing the scene.

A police team was formed to investigate the complaints. The team gathered details and features of the suspects from the victims.

The police set a trap for the suspects and arrested them.

The suspects confessed to the charges and the case has been transferred to the Public Prosecution for further action.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Matroushi said: “We found out that the suspects were targeting people who did not have adequate knowledge about the legal procedures taken by the police or that they should ask for a police identity card.”

The police urged people to always ask for the police ID when someone claims he is a policeman. Policemen never ask to show wallets or demand money. If anyone encounters any such people, they should report the matter to the police.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Matroushi said four cases of impersonation of policemen have been recorded with Ajman Police since the beginning of this year.
