Pharmacist arrested for selling narcotics from his vehicle

Customers included teenagers, say police who found liquid Tramadol

Sharjah: An Arab pharmacist was arrested in Sharjah yesterday for allegedly selling Tramadol in a concentrated liquid form, in addition to various other controlled narcotics, from his car.

Colonel Jihad Sahoo, Director of the Drug Control Department at Sharjah Police, expressed regret over the involvement of a doctor in promoting such dangerous drugs. "This case provides evidence that any professional can take advantage of the youth, and that anybody can alter the form of drugs. Selling drugs outside a pharmacy is just another method of dealing drugs, and police are constantly carrying out awareness programmes in schools against drugs," he said.

Highly concentrated

Col Sahoo said the pharmacist met customers, including teenagers, outside the shop and then sold the prescribed narcotics from his car. The anti-narcotics department at Sharjah Police collaborated with inspectors from the Ministry of Health to apprehend him.

"When the suspect was apprehended, we discovered Tramadol in a highly concentrated liquid form, and this is the first time we discovered it being sold in such a form. He also sold capsules and other mood-altering drugs," Col Sahoo said.

The suspect admitted buying the narcotics from abroad, storing them in his pharmacy, and keeping some in his car to sell.

The case has been referred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution.
