Dubai: A Kenyan woman charged with smuggling drugs into the country hidden inside her private parts, yesterday claimed at the Dubai Court of First Instance that she did not know the substance was a narcotic.

"I did not know what substance I was carrying. Someone gave it to me and asked me to hand it over to another person. I am innocent," the 32-year-old woman told Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir Fahmi.
According to the charge sheet, L.W. was accused of transporting, via transit, crystals of methamphetamine weighing nearly a kilogram.
When the charges were read out, L.W. admitted she transported the crystals, but insisted she did not know what they were.
An Emirati first corporal at Dubai Police's anti-narcotics department testified: "I was on duty at Dubai International Airport's transit terminal when I spotted the defendant walking suspiciously on her own.
"When I asked her for her passport, she panicked and seemed confused and scared. I asked my colleague, a policewoman, to search her and her luggage. L.W. took out capsules from her vagina in which some drug crystals were hidden."
An Emirati policewoman told the prosecutors that she accompanied the suspect to Dubai Hospital, where the crystals were extracted. The policewoman said the crystals were extracted after the woman was given some medication.
The court adjourned to May 4 when the verdict will be announced.
