Dubai: An Emirati suspect landed in court for allegedly threatening to kill his father, mother, sister and two brothers because his mother refused to give him money.

Prosecutors accused the 21-year-old unemployed man with verbally threatening to kill his 61-year-old father, 47-year-old mother, brothers and sister and when his family reported him to the police, he also cursed, threatened and assaulted two policemen.

Prosecution records said a police corporal shot the suspect, who was armed with a knife, in his right leg to let a police team restrain and arrest him.

The defendant denied charges when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday.

When Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir, in courtroom four, read the charges of threat, assault and cursing against him, the suspect pleaded not guilty.

According to the chargesheet, prosecutors claim the enraged suspect, K.M., threatened to kill his five-member family if they approached him in their family house in Muraqqabat.

He was charged with beating his father and their housemaid. Prosecutors also accused him of cursing his parents and sister besides cursing a police lieutenant and a corporal and threatening to kill them when they tried to detain him.

Cursing

His sister, 25, testified that her brother stormed into the house around 11.30pm and scolded his mother after grabbing a knife from the kitchen.

"He yelled at my mum and asked for money… he cursed everybody. He also took the food, which my mum had cooked, and threw it in the bathroom. He quarrelled with my two brothers before my mum took them out of the house… then he stormed into my bedroom and held a knife at my neck and face. He then took my mobile phone and broke it. Then he beat the housemaid and ordered her to clean the house all night long. Immediately I called up the police after he banged my father's head to the wall because he told him he didn't have money," the sister alleged in her prosecution statement.

The father testified that his son constantly troubled them and treated his family with disrespect.

"I was in my bedroom when I heard him shouting and destroying cutlery… he stormed into my room and called me a pimp," alleged the father.

An Emirati first lieutenant testified: "A police corporal fired warning bullets in the air because the suspect was threatening them with a knife… after the mother allowed us to raid the house, we stormed in from a back door and controlled the situation. When he tried to knife me, the corporal shot him in the leg," the first lieutenant told prosecutors.

Prosecution witnesses will be heard when the court reconvenes on May 23.
