The couple got married in November, but their marriage lasted for only seven days
Ras Al Khaimah: A newly-wed man will receive 80 lashes for insulting and beating his wife, the Ras Al Khaimah Appeal Court ruled on Thursday. The man had appealed the previous ruling which ordered him to pay a Dh5,000 fine and sentenced him to two moths in jail. A judiciary official told Gulf News the appeal court has issued the ruling in favour of the complainant.
The Emirati couple got married in November, but their marriage lasted for only seven days after which they were divorced, said the official.
The 40-year-old Emirati groom had accused his 20-year-old Emirati bride of exploiting him after he gave her Dh1 million as dowry, the official added.
Disputes broke out between them since the first day of their marriage. Financial problems exacerbated the situation as well, he said. The man had reportedly said he was shocked to find his wife did not buy anything for him. He shouted at her and beat her during a heated argument, said the official.
Huge problem
The wife escaped from the husband's house and rushed to the police station to file a case against him, pleading for a divorce because he insulted and had beaten her, he said.
The man claimed his wife left their home without any reason and denied all her allegations, according to the official.
Divorce is becoming a huge problem in the UAE as it leads the rest of the Gulf states in break-ups, marriage counsellors and sociologists earlier warned.
