Sharjah: Police were called after a naked woman was spotted walking on Al Wahda Road in Sharjah.

A 22-second video spread via social media showed the Nigerian woman, 24, removing her clothes in daylight hours.

Lieutenant Colonel Yousuf Bin Hramoul, Director of Buhairah police station, said the incident was reported to police by a passer-by.

Residents and shopowners were shocked at the scene and one passer-by confronted the woman and prevented her from crossing the street.

A team of female police officers soon arrived. The woman reportedly told police she did not know why she was naked and declined to explain her actions.

The woman was referred to Public Prosecution on a charge of committing an indecent act.

Lieutenant Colonel Bin Hramoul denounced the behaviour. He said it is the first time it has happened in Sharjah.

Sharjah criminal court sentenced the woman to six months in jail following by deportation. The appeal court reduced the jail term to one month.

The incident took place on January 16. The woman has since served her jail term and has been deported.
