Sharjah: A total of 630 people contacted Najeed Security Service of Sharjah Police over the past eight months to report crimes and social and security issues, said Major Ebrahim Meer Abdul Rahman, acting director of media and public relations department at Sharjah Police

Najeed service of Sharjah Police allows residents to report cases that can threaten the safety and security of the society and the country and also to make queries on police-related issues. Maj Abdul Rahman said that people who contacted Najeed security service either live here or are on a visit to the country as well as foreigners from outside the country.

As many as 630 people called the toll-free number 800151 while other people sent emails, SMSes as well as faxes.

The calls included fraud cases, financial blackmail, social cases, security cases, and inquiries that included comments and appreciation.

“We are encouraging the public to report serious issues that could affect the security of the country,” said Major Abdul Rahman

The police officer said police encourage the public to take initiatives in reporting security cases to the Najeed service.

“The public are now able to communicate with Najeed through different channels alongside the traditional means of communication such as the toll-free number and fax. They can communicate with Najeed through different applications that are available through smartphone, social networks, Najeed’s official website and SMS service,” he said.

“We aim for mutual relations between the police and the public in order to protect the stability of the society,” he said

The Najeed service is available 24 hours, seven days a week and police will deal with each case in confidentiality, while there will be no legal responsibility for those who contact Najeed.

Major Abdul Rahman pointed out examples of the calls received which included a complaint against an Arab man who was hunting girls and threatening them if they did not satisfy his desires. Police set a trap and arrested the accused.

Another example was of complaints regarding a site under construction frequently visited by a group of Asians. Police investigation showed that the place was being used for sale of alcohol. The police arrested the suspects.

Maj Abdul Rahman said Najeed does not receive emergency calls.

“For emergency calls, the public must contact 999 and for police general inquiries, the public can contact 06-5632222,” he said.

The Najeed Service was officially launched in June 2011.
