Dubai: A Sudanese woman who was arrested earlier this month for strangling her month-old twins will be provided with a defence lawyer, said a senior official from the Sudanese consulate in Dubai on Sunday.
Fatima Abdullah Abkar Othman, 20, was found lying on top of her twins at her house in Falaj Al Mualla in Umm Al Quwain on August 2. The matter was brought to light when the father of the twins, Abu Aqasim Abbas Dawood Hamad, 32, a driver, received a telephone call from his six-year-old daughter Salima that her mother had fallen unconscious on the twins.
Her father, who was unable to get home on time, asked his brother to rush to his house and see what the matter was. When his brother got there he found Fatima lying on top of the twins. All three were rushed to Umm Al Quwain Hospital where the twins were declared dead.
Psychological problems
The Consulate of Sudan in a statement on Sunday said Hassan Salah Siwar Al Dhabab, deputy consul general, along with Colonel Ali Abdul Rahman, head of the passport section at the consulate, went to met Fatima who is being held at Umm Al Quwain Prison.
The statement said that Fatima had come to the UAE just a few months ago to be with her husband. The consulate has been informed by the prison authorities that Fatima is suffering from psychological problems and that she has been referred to a psychiatrist twice while in prison. Fatima has refused food in prison and this has resulted in further complications to her health.
The consulate has informed her husband that his wife will be provided with a defence lawyer. Procedures have also been taken to allow Salima to visit her mother.
