Dubai: A marine lieutenant has pleaded guilty to possessing hashish 'which he claims he unintentionally forgot in his jeans,' heard a court on Tuesday.

"I did possess the drugs ... I am a marine lieutenant and I unintentionally forgot it in my possession," the Egyptian suspect, M.F., told Presiding Judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm of the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The Public Prosecution charged the suspect with illegally bringing in and possessing 0.12 grams of hashish. When Judge Bin Sarm asked him about the intention behind possessing the drugs, the suspect said he accidentally forgot it in his pocket.

The customs inspector, who stopped the suspect to search him at the airport, testified: "The suspect arrived from Cairo at about 3.30pm. I took him to a room where I found the hashish in his jeans pocket. When I confronted him with the findings, the suspect confessed that it is hashish."

The inspector said during the public prosecution questioning that the Egyptian claimed he forgot the drugs in his pocket 'as he consumes hashish in his country.'

"He said he did not intend to bring the drug during his visit to the UAE," said the inspector.
