Dubai: An Egyptian man, who was caught smoking hashish in the parking lot of Bur Dubai Police Station, pleaded guilty in court on Monday.

Prosecutors charged the 32-year-old A.W., with possessing 9.98 grammes of hashish and consuming tetrahydrocannabinol, an active component of hashish.

"I am guilty. I possessed and consumed drugs," said A.W. when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

When Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad asked A.W. what he wanted from the court, the accused said: "Your honour, I have been detained for four months and I want a quick judgment."

Alert

A first sergeant from Dubai police's anti-narcotics department testified: "My supervisor asked me to go to the parking lot outside Bur Dubai Police Station and detain the suspect.

"An informant had alerted the department that the suspect possessed and consumed drugs.

"We headed to the place and found the suspect in his car.

"We didn't find any drugs in his possession.

"Later he admitted that he uses drugs and took out three pouches of hashish which were hidden in a brown handbag at his house in Al Quoz."

Prosecution records cited the defendant admitting that he consumed a hashish cigarette one hour prior to his arrest.

The judgement is expected to be handed down on February 15.
