Dubai: A US marine officer was jailed for one month after he admitted in a court Tuesday that he slashed his wrist and swallowed tablets in an attempt to kill himself.

The Dubai Misdemeanours Court jailed the 40-year-old American officer, A.A., for one month for attempted suicide and fined him Dh1,000 for consuming liquor.

Prosecutors accused A.A. of trying to kill himself by slashing his wrist and taking tens of tablets used by cardiac patients. It is believed that he attempted suicide after his wife told his commanders that he allegedly sexually abused his daughter since she was 11.

Records said housekeepers found him unconscious in the bathtub of Dubai International Airport Hotel.

When the defendant appeared in Courtroom 9 Tuesday, he pleaded guilty.

Summoned to US

According to the bill of charges, A.A. slashed his wrist with a piece of broken glass and swallowed pills.

When questioned by prosecutor Sultan Saif, the defendant claimed that he was in Dubai when he came to know through his friend about the reason why his commanders summoned him to the US.

He claimed that his daughter broke the news to his wife and she in turn reported the matter to A.A.'s superiors.

The marine officer claimed in his prosecution statement that when his commanders did not inform him why they summoned him, he phoned his friend who told him the truth about what happened.

He claimed during questioning that he decided to end his life because he would not be able to face up the embarrassment back home.

Tuesday's judgment remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
