Dubai: A British man admitted to consuming liquor and refuted the charge of punching a manager and cursing him in public when he appeared in court on Monday.

Prosecutors accused the 46-year-old British director of causing one per cent permanent disability to the Swede's face and cursing him in public while he was under the influence of alcohol.

The suspect, T. A., admitted to having liquor when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance. When Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad levelled the charges of cursing and assault against T.A., he pleaded not guilty.

The 35-year-old Swede S. H.'s lawyer Bader Khamis Abdullah handed the court a civil compensation claim against his client's damages.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said T.A. did not intend to cause one per cent disability to S. H. after assaulting him.

The Briton was charged with assaulting and cursing S.H. in public and while he was under the influence of liquor. S.H. testified that the incident happened when the suspect phoned and asked to meet him to resolve a few business disputes between them.

"I was at [a] bowling centre when he informed me that he was waiting for me in front of my house… when I reached there, he seemed drunk and tensed.

"He yelled at me and cursed me as well. He grabbed my head from the back and punched me then I fell to the ground… then T.A. left the place. Guardsmen came to me and I was rushed to hospital," the Swede said in his prosecution statement.

Medical reports confirmed that S.H.'s lip was permanently disabled.

The trial continues.
