Dubai: An Iraqi has denied bringing a fellow countrywoman into Dubai, saying she was his wife, and then forcing her to dance in pubs and work as a prostitute, a court heard on Sunday.

Prosecutors accused 29-year-old A.N., of committing a human trafficking offence by bringing the 26-year-old woman to Dubai and allegedly sexually exploiting her.

The defendant pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout at the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The woman, L.A., claimed in her prosecution statement the defendant's brother met her in Iraq and promised to send a Dh2,500 monthly payment to her mother if she agreed to work a dancer in Dubai.

Prosecutors charged A.N. with deceiving L.A. and exploiting her. He was accused of conspiring with his brother R. (who is at large) against the woman and bringing her in as A.N.'s wife, then forcing her to work as a prostitute.

Sting operation

Prosecution records said the defendants beat her and forced her to have sex with men against her will.

"I was flown to Oman and brought here through the land borders… I stayed in different places. Later we settled in a flat in Sharjah. Then I was told I had to have sex with men for money… I refused twice before I was beaten and forced into prostitution. They threatened and blackmailed me saying I owed them Dh100,000 and my passport was confiscated," L.A. told prosecutors.

An Emirati anti-human trafficking first corporal testified A.N. was detained during a sting operation.
