Dubai: A man who attempted to commit suicide after his girlfriend refused to marry him yesterday denied in court the charge of attempting to kill her.

The 32-year-old man J.K., stabbed his 40-year-old girlfriend, N.B., three times in an attempt to kill her, immediately after he drank pesticide, according to prosecution records.

Prosecutors charged J.K., an Indian with attempting to murder N.B., a Sri Lankan, when he stabbed her twice in her stomach and once in her arm.

"No, sir I did not stab her or try to kill her… I am not guilty," said J.K. when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

When Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout asked J.K. if he had any defence, J.K. said: "No sir… I just want a judgment."

An Emirati policeman, who questioned J.K., said the latter claimed N.B. ditched him and rejected his proposal although a former Hindu he embraced Islam so that he could marry her.

Hidden knife

"The alleged murder attempt happened in front of the door of a flat where N.B. stayed with relatives in a building in Al Nahda. When I reached the place, J.K. was handcuffed and placed down on the floor… he didn't seem normal. Paramedics told me that he was not drunk. Then he told me that he had decided to kill himself with poison after killing his ex-girlfriend.

"J.K. said he put some pesticide in his juice and hid the knife in his laptop bag. Then he met N.B. and asked her why she ditched him and refused to marry him. Then he claimed to me that when she neglected him, he drank the poison and stabbed her thrice," the policeman claimed to prosecutors.

Crying for help

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan woman testified she was heading out of the flat when J.K. stood in front of her.

"He took out a knife from his laptop bag and stabbed me. He stabbed me first in my belly and cried ‘I will kill you'. Then he stabbed me for the second time in the left side of my belly. I fought him back and tried to remove the knife away from his hand… but he stabbed me for a third time in my arm. Then I cried for help and fell to the floor. Neighbours rushed to help me and they pulled J.K. away from me. Police and paramedics came and I was rushed to hospital," N.B. said during prosecution questioning.
