Dubai: A driver has admitted that he duplicated the key of the tailor shop where he worked and stole money to transfer it to his family in Bangladesh.

Records said the 31-year-old Bangladeshi driver made a copy of the tailor shop's main gate key and stole cash from the register on several occasions after closing hours.

Police action

The defendant, M.H., was cited in his confession to the Public Prosecution as saying that he stole Dh3,500.

The suspect was charged with stealing Dh8,000 during a period of 45 days. He pleaded guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

A 42-year-old Pakistani tailor testified in his statement: "At first instance we discovered that Dh3,000 was missing from the register ... we didn't report the robbery to the police because we wanted to maintain the shop's reputation and we didn't expose the thief. A month later a similar amount [was missing] from the register. The shop owner reported [the matter to] the police as soon as he discovered that another Dh2,000 was taken from the register."

A police squad monitored the shop and caught the suspect red-handed.

The suspect admitted to the public prosecutor who questioned him that he duplicated the key and used it to steal after the shop closed in the evening.

He claimed that he transferred the money to his family. A ruling will be heard soon.
