Sharjah: Police have arrested a man accused of stealing from parked cars in residential areas, an official said.

It is believed the suspect, identified as S.A.Sh., from Comoros, broke vehicle windows to unlock car doors and steal valuables left inside.

Officials said several car owners had lodged complaints with Al Hira police where many thefts have taken place, saying they had lost money, jewellery and other valuables kept in cars. Many had parked alongside buildings near their homes or on the roadside while they were at work or visiting friends and relatives. Theft complaints have been reported from different locations across the emirate, officials said.

Police formed a team to track down the suspect and arrested him. Police managed to identify the suspect and caught him red-handed. The case has been referred to the public prosecution.

Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Musabeh Al Ajel, Head of Investigations and Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police, appealed to people not to leave valuables in their cars or to keep their engines running when they leave their vehicles unattended.

He urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour around their vehicles or in their residential areas by calling the following numbers: 999, 065632222 or the Najeed police service’s toll-free number 800151 or via SMS on 7999.
