Dubai: A man who threatened two siblings with a knife when he entered their vehicle as they were about to drive off was arrested recently.

Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, director of the General Department of the Criminal Investigations Department of Dubai Police, said the suspect, from eastern Europe, threatened the two sisters when he entered their car as they prepared to drive off.

The suspect snatched the women's personal items including their hand bags and jewellery, before forcing them out of the vehicle and escaping using their car.

The incident happened in a public parking area in Al Muraqqabat, said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, director of the Criminal Investigations Division within Dubai Police.

A police investigative team was formed to locate the suspect by organising undercover operations close to different money exchange stores and banks.

Caught on camera

The suspect was caught on CCTV footage available in car parking areas, Lt Col Al Merri said.

He was arrested along with three other suspects while they were driving in a congested area, he added.

"Based on our investigations and descriptions from the victims, we had strong suspicions of the suspect in that car," Lt Col Al Merri said. "The victims later identified the suspect at the Criminal Investigations Department in line-up via one-sided mirrors," he said.

The Victims Support Programme at Dubai Police followed up with the victims who were shaken after being robbed by the suspect.

"Arresting the suspect was not an easy task as we were [working] with few details and relying on the descriptions given by the suspects," Lt Col Al Merri added.

"Many patrol units were monitoring the streets to locate the suspect."
