Dubai: A housemaid has pleaded guilty to stealing a mobile phone and Dh200 from her sponsor's children, a court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors accused the 20-year-old Ethiopian housemaid of stealing from an Emirati woman, K.S., who is her sponsor.

"I am guilty… I did rob money from my sponsor," said the suspect, J.W., in a shy voice and with her head facing down when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

When Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir asked the suspect what she wanted from the court, J.W. asked for leniency.

Caught red-handed

The Emirati sponsor, who is a doctor, said she caught the defendant stealing her son's mobile phone.

"She stole Dh200 from the wallets of my children while they were inside their bedrooms… I also saw her stealing my son's phone. Then she escaped secretly," the sponsor told the court.

When she was questioned at the Public Prosecution, the suspect admitted that she stole the children's money but added that she did not count the money when she took from their wardrobes.

A verdict is expected to be delivered by the court on March 10.
