Dubai: Two lovers locked themselves up in their sports utility vehicle [SUV] for two hours, afraid of turning themselves in to police who caught them having sex in the car.
The duo were caught in the act by a police patrol at 4 am but only stepped out of the car at around 6 am when a special rescue team arrived and a forcible eviction looked imminent.
An Emirati police corporal, who spotted the car in a suspicious location called in a special rescue team after the occupants refused to step out.
He said he spent nearly two hours trying to convince the Iraqi carpenter and his Russian girlfriend to open the locked car but in vain.
According to prosecution records, as soon as the carpenter, W.J., 34, spotted the rescue teams trying to prise open the doors, he unlocked the car and stepped out along with his lover, C.R., 20, a college student.
W.J., who appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanour Court on Tuesday, confessed that he had had consensual sex with C.R. in his SUV in a sandy area behind Mall of the Emirates.
W.J. is in police custody but C.R., who is on bail, failed to attend Tuesday's hearing.
Presiding Judge Ebrahim Khalil Abu Shamma adjourned the case until later this month. The couple are charged with having consensual sex.
