Abu Dhabi: Kholoud Ahmad Jua'an Al Daheri has become the first female judge in the UAE, according to an Emiri decree.

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued the decree appointing Kholoud as a primary judge at the Abu Dhabi Judiciary Department.

The appointment of Khaloud makes the UAE the second Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state to have a female judge after Bahrain, which appointed its first female judge in June 2006. Shaikh Khalifa's decree is part of the comprehensive development witnessed by the judiciary department throughout the UAE and underlines the government's commitment to women's participation in the overall development.

The move also underlines the UAE leadership's commitment to engage women in major fields of their country's development process.

Kholoud graduated from the UAE University with a Bachelors' Degree in Sharia and law, and has been in the judicial corps for eight years.

Bestowing trust

Kholoud thanked the UAE leadership for bestowing the trust upon her, noting that she will be under the spotlight as the first female judge in the UAE, and her performance could play a role in evaluating the success of appointing women in the judicial field. She added that her appointment would motivate her to exert more effort and discharge her duties efficiently and accurately to be worthy of the trust bestowed upon her, and to become a successful model for women in judiciary.

In January, the Minister of Justice amended the judiciary law to allow women to hold positions as judges and prosecutors at the federal level.
