Dubai: A visitor, who claims he missed his father's funeral because he was in custody, fears he may face the same ordeal due to the illness of his mother.

The Nigerian man who was jailed for using fake dollars is now seeking instant deportation.

"I didn't know that the $700 (Dh2,590) was counterfeited... I missed my father's funeral and now my mother is very sick and my children need me," claimed the 37-year-old Nigerian visitor, when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The suspect, who has been detained since May, asked Presiding Judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm to deport him because he wants to see his mother whom he claimed is suffering from a serious disease.

Plane tickets

He asked the judge to give his verdict during Tuesday's hearing because he fears that he might face the same ordeal - which he suffered when he missed his father's funeral - if she dies while he's still in detention.

The Public Prosecution charged the suspect, O.A., with paying the $700 to buy plane tickets to Vietnam. He pleaded innocent and alleged he was unaware that the currency was fake.

A Pakistani supervisor who sells air tickets at Dnata testified: "The suspect bought two tickets in two different timings during one night... at 9:15pm he paid $700 (Dh2,590) and Dh235, then he returned at 11:40pm and paid Dh750 (about Dh2,775) plus Dh52."

Records said an accountant discovered that O.A. allegedly paid $100 in fake currency to purchase the first ticket and $600 in fake notes to purchase the second one.

Dnata supervisors confronted him the second day when he went to buy a third ticket.
