Dubai: An unemployed man has been referred to court for allegedly deliberately setting fire to his wife's car and his sister-in-law's villa, causing Dh500,000 worth of damages, following financial disputes.

Prosecutors charged the 32-year-old unemployed Iraqi suspect with arson, trespassing in his sister-in-law's villa and endangering the lives of his wife and a policeman by trying to run them over with his wife's vehicle.

When the suspect, A.H., did not appear in the Dubai Court of First Instance y, Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir adjourned the case until the suspect is notified legally to attend the hearing.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors additionally accused the defendant of setting fire to his wife's car, which was completely gutted.

R.K., a 27-year-old Iraqi, testified that she woke up around 1am and she spotted a strong light coming from her sister's villa. She said her sister was abroad.

R.K. said the police patrol notified her of the fire. She alleged that her husband got in her car and tried to run her and the Yemeni policeman over before speeding off.

The Yemeni policeman testified that R.K. allegedly told him that her husband had just been released from prison and threatened to kill her and burn her villa.

An Emirati first corporal, who questioned the suspect, testified: "He admitted to me that he committed the crime because he was angered by his wife's family because they took his money and wanted to dismiss him from his house."

The trial continues.
