Abu Dhabi The exchange of information and other acts of cooperation between nations are vital to tackling security challenges, senior officials said on Monday as the International Security National Resilience Exhibition and Conference (ISNR) kicked off.

The sharing of information and other acts of cooperation are important in bringing criminals to justice, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief said.

"It is Dubai Police's cooperation with... Interpol and [the] efficient exchange of information that led to the arrest of the notorious Pink Panther gang [which] robbed the Wafi mall in 2007," he said, citing one example of cooperation.

The gang had robbed 132 shops in Europe in 2002, and were highly skilled and professional, Dahi said. However, collective efforts bore fruits, Dahi said after he delivered a detailed presentation on how the crime was solved.

He said information needs to be analysed in the right manner for it to be useful.

He cited an intelligence report Dubai police had prepared two weeks before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The report mentioned the possibility that attempts would be made to topple the government.

"Two weeks before Kuwait's invasion we mentioned its possibility in a report... It was based on a conversation overheard by a resident of Turkey who visited Kuwait," Dahi said.

Suspicions

He said the civilian had raised his suspicions on the possible toppling of the Kuwaiti leadership, with the support of Iraq. Dahi added that the information was not taken seriously at the time.

The second edition of the ISNR was inaugurated on Monday by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. The event, being held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ends on Monday.

The event provides an opportunity for regional governments and related sectors in security matters to meet and exchange notes, the minister said.
