Dubai: A tailor has rejected the charge of beating his wife to death because she did not breastfeed their newborn baby, claiming in court on Sunday that she fell and died.

"I did not beat her to death… she is my wife. She fell on the floor and died. I am not guilty," argued the Pakistani tailor while defending himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Prosecutors charged the 26-year-old tailor, M.G., with beating his wife, A.F., with his hands and a plastic pipe. She then fell and died after her head hit the floor.

Quarrel

The suspect's 28-year-old brother, M.N., claimed that his brother told him that he quarrelled with his wife and beat her because she did not breastfeed their baby.

According to the charge sheet, M.G. was accused of beating which led to her death.

"When I went to pick my brother up, his baby was crying and he seemed confused. When I asked him about his wife, he said he beat her with hands and a plastic pipe until she fainted because she refused to breastfeed the baby," the brother said.

Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir adjourned the case until later this month to assign a lawyer to defend the suspect.
