Dubai: Police are on the hunt for man who stole a necklace from a jewellery shop at Dubai Mall last week.

The Oriental-looking suspect's caper was caught by the shop's surveillance camera, police sources said.

According to police, the suspect, who was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, went to the shop and posed as a customer.

After looking through the shop's collection, he allegedly asked the shop assistant to take a gold necklace out of the showcase.

He then sneaked out of the shop with the necklace valued at $18,000 (Dh66,096.5).

Investigators are trying to identify the suspect based on the security camera footage.

Police said they have a clear picture of the suspect who they said even looked straight at the camera.

Investigators likewise questioned assistants from adjacent shops to check whether they recognise the suspect or have seen him enter their shops before or after the crime was committed.

Pictures of the suspect which were grabbed from video footage were also immediately reproduced and distributed to different shops.

Police also warned jewellery shops to be more careful when showing their goods to customers.

"Such incidents happen regularly when a customer asks the salesman at a jewellery shop to show many designs and models which makes it difficult for the salesman to remember what he showed to the customer," police said.
