DUBAI: Last December, personnel from Dubai Police went to Pakistan undercover and successfully persuaded a Pakistani woman to return and stand trial for killing a man in Al Ghusais.

They might have to do something like that all over again. Only this time, the woman they are after is no ordinary target. She's a drug queen. Four members of her gang were caught near the Al Aweer Fruit and Vegetable Market trying to load a pick-up with 52kg of heroin, hidden in orange cartons. The contraband is estimated to be worth Dh104million.

Maj Gen Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of the General Department for Anti Narcotics, said the drug was smuggled from Pakistan and was destined for Nigeria.

Two of the suspects said they were working for a woman based in Pakistan. Curiously, this is the second time in less than one year that police have swooped down on Al Aweer market and seized heroin hidden in orange crates. Their June 2011 haul here was equally massive - 58kg. One of the suspects was a Pakistani, fuelling speculation the mastermind in both cases could be the same woman.

Maj Gen Mahdi said the police are working with international authorities to extradite the woman who is said to be in her mid-50s.
