Dubai: A housemaid has been jailed for three months for stealing Dh120,000 from her sponsor's safe after he left the keys at home.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 26-year-old Indonesian housemaid of stealing from her sponsor, although she pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors accused her of stealing cash from the safe of her 39-year-old Emirati sponsor, M.S.

Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad said the accused, S.A., will be deported after the completion of her jail term.

"The accused had worked for us for one year and a half. On the day of the incident I went out and forgot my safe keys at home… when I returned I discovered that Dh120,000 was taken from the safe. S.A. was at home alone that day," stated M.S. during prosecution questioning.

Wired home money

His 35-year-old female relative, S.O., testified: "Between 5pm and 5:30pm M.S. told me that some Dh120,000 was missing from his safe… he said he left the safe locked properly before he went out. We used to go to work and leave the accused working at home alone each morning." Meanwhile M.S.'s sister testified that the accused wired the stolen money to her country.

"S.A.'s husband returned Dh27,000. We obtained a money-transfer receipt confirming that she wired to Indonesia some Dh10,050 with the assistance of her colleague," claimed the sister.

Prosecution records quoted the defendant admitting that she took from the safe Dh60,000, Dh30,000 on two separate occasions.

The judgment is still subject to appeal within 13 days.
