Homesick worker rips open his belly in suicide attempt
An Indian man in his early 20s, ripped open his stomach in a suicide bid after his sponsor refused to send him home.
Sharjah: An Indian man in his early 20s, ripped open his stomach in a suicide bid after his sponsor refused to send him home.
Police said the man identified as S. Kumar, was extremely homesick and attempted to commit suicide on Wednesday afternoon at his work place in the industrial area in Sharjah.
He was found bleeding profusely by a colleague.
Kumar was rushed to Al Qasimi Hospital where he underwent urgent surgery to save his life.
He was later transferred to the intensive care unit.
Kumar told police that he arrived in the UAE recently and had a valid resident and work visa.
He told police that he was not able to cope with his new life here and wished to go back to India.
He said he told his Indian sponsor many times of his desire to go home.
Kumar said he took the extreme step as he could not continue to live here. "I begged him to let me go but he refused," he said.
The sponsor apparently told him he could not send him back as he had already spent a lot of money to bring him here to work.
Kumar said he has no money to repay his employer.
Kumar told police that he decided to end his life by stabbing himself in the stomach repeatedly and ripping apart his belly.
A case will soon be filed against Kumar for trying to commit suicide, police said.
