Dubai: A guard has been charged with allegedly molesting a girl in a coma after sleeping beside her on a hospital bed.

Prosecutors accused the 34-year-old Emirati guardsman of molesting the girl, also Emirati, while she was unconscious on a government hospital bed.

Jail wardens failed to bring the defendant, M.I., from his detention centre and present him at the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to be prosecuted before Presiding Judge Dr Ali Galadari on Sunday.

According to the arraignment sheet, prosecutors charged M.I. with kissing and hugging the girl.

A 22-year-old Filipina nurse testified that the suspect walked into the girl's room and ordered the nurse to leave.

"He locked to door from inside immediately after I walked out… when I looked from the small window, I spotted him kissing her. The next day I saw him sleeping beside her…," alleged the nurse in her prosecution statement.

An Egyptian security guard at the hospital claimed to prosecutors: "I was told that an Arab man was staying in one of the women-only rooms…I headed to the girl's room and found the suspect inside. I faced so much difficulty to walk him out of the room. I heard the defendant telling a nurse that he is the girl's husband… then I heard him claim that he is her brother."

Prosecution records have shown that the girl's 71-year-old father reported the matter to the authorities. The defendant was quoted admitting that he held the girl's hand while she was in a coma.

Presiding Judge Dr Galadari adjourned the case until May 26.
