Dubai: A gang of six construction workers has been arrested for breaking in and stealing a safe containing Dh45,000 and phone recharge cards from a grocery at a construction site in Jebel Ali.

The safe weighed about 50kg.

A CID team found the safe about a kilometre from the grocery and was hidden in metal waste that belonged to a construction company. The thieves for some reason had left behind the accountant's passport, Dh1,350 and 30 phone cards in the locker.

Investigations revealed that a Bangladeshi worker had disappeared at the time of the theft. Police started a search for him and received a tip off that he visited a number of labour accommodations in Al Satwa.

When police set a trap they found found Dh4,690 on him and two bills from a jewellery shop and another one for a mobile phone.

The suspect confessed and pointed the finger at five other suspects from Bangladesh. He said they shared the loot equally, but police found that he had swindled the others.

Within the hour, the rest of the gang was arrested and the stolen items were recovered. The suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecution.
